On MiX

25Jun09

Oh noes – I’ve been thinking lately.

There really is no good excuse for the fact that we’ve – to my knowledge – never bothered to find a place for credits/captions for the MiX cover.

Unless anyone’s terribly offended by the idea, I think there should be no problem finding a home for it on MiX Page 2. I just think that when we use a photo, photo illustration or graphic illustration in such a huge way, it’s wrong to never credit the photog/designer/models,etc.

The World uses a neat little mini-view of the cover in its Go! Page 2 rail, similar to what USA Today does to tease special sections on A1.

However, one problem still lurks.

We have no MiX editor for fall. I would greatly, greatly, GREATLY appreciate some recommendations for candidates. Whoever ends up doing it deserves having some time to plan.

A good candidate:

  • has taste, creativity, innovation.
  • can edit, respect deadlines.
  • will possess some news judgment.
  • can manage not to strangle writers
  • knows that “feature” is not the only verb in the English language.
  • will REALLY be able to do some recruiting of his/her own.

P.S. I did briefly contemplate just running MiX myself, but I decided it was a horrible idea for two reasons.

  • A. I’ll need any spare time I have in the fall to apply for law schools and grad schools.
  • 2. I won’t need any more reasons to strangle people.

I think crediting the cover on page 2 is a fine idea. I see nothing wrong with that, and I agree with you – give credit where credit is due, right?

Just in terms of thinking it through, make sure you decide ahead of time what constitutes the art and how it will be credited. One artist or one photographer is simple, but if it’s a collaboration how do you do it? What about the times when it’s a last-minute thing? Will the MiX editor frequently be getting extra credit for typical layout duties of their job (since other editors, like copy editors, don’t get credit for layout)?

Just to think about. And definitely a good call not to do it yourself. As editor you have to always think that any day-to-day stuff you get stuck with is taking away from the long-term planning, training and vision of the paper. And you’ll lay out plenty of wire pages anyway, most likely.

As a totally random and potentially high-maintenance idea, it would be fun to pair a MiX editor with guest editors, a la Newsweek’s recent issue with Stephen Colbert.
