Overheard on Wenatchee Avenue
30Jun09
Setting: I’m approaching strangers downtown for reax to a new arena football team coming to town soon.
I introduce myself to a Seattle man as a World reporter and ask him a few questions. I quickly realize he’s from out of town and won’t have much to say. So I thank him and go to leave, but he wants to keep talking.
“So, are you, uh, like, with the high-school newspaper here?” he asks.
I answered politely, but I kind of wanted to say, “No, sir, I’m a real journalist.”

What I have gotten a lot is, “So, how long have you been working at the Enterprise/P-I?”
An obvious reaction to my apparent age/lack of name recognition.
Then I hate having to tell them I’m an intern, because I like to pretend I’m a pro and I can feel sources’ trust sinking.
But I think your incident is the most insulting. I’m sorry. :-(
